Accelerating Virtual Exchange
Accelerating Virtual Exchange
Bound International offers a specialized program by which universities can execute effective online international learning. We offer a full-service, high-support model that makes it easy for faculty and their universities to quickly connect their classes with those abroad. Our program is equally a faculty development opportunity as it is a student learning opportunity. We add critical capacity to the acceleration of international engagement via technology.
Our model includes the following services:
If college faculty have a colleague or institution abroad with whom they’d like to co-design and co-teach a COIL course, we can train both of them and facilitate the course. If faculty want to co-design and co-teach a COIL course, but do not have a partner yet, we can provide one for them and even customize their preferences.
We identify and utilize a platform that optimizes student learning across borders and time zones via technology. Our platform affords faculty creativity and ease of use in connecting students for intercultural engagement and high impact projects. We also provide active support for technical setup and usage.
We have identified the most essential knowledge and resources necessary for faculty to co-teach and co-design a COIL course. We arrange training for our faculty during the academic term prior to the COIL course that also does not monopolize too much of their time. We provide them the tools that they need, with enough time, to helm a COIL course. Training sessions occur within a cohort. Experienced and inexperienced faculty are invited to join us.
We afford faculty a license to access culturally-based information that informs and elevates their course content. GlobeSmart is an online resource hub that promotes global collaboration and inclusion and is an application of Aperian Global.
We understand that intercultural competency is a critical skill for the 21st century, impacting a sense of citizenship and a global economy. It enhances both teaching ability and student learning. Bound International assesses both faculty and students taking part in a COIL course to show the effect of teaching and learning across borders via technology, adding critical data to the field of international education.
Coaches provide individuals an important layer of guidance and support that is designed to accelerate personal growth. We select professionals with specific skills in teaching, travel and technology to act as coaches for our COIL faculty. Our coaches collaborate with faculty during training and teaching, mentoring them as they undertake a fulfilling, yet multi-dimensional experience.
In a rapidly growing field with increasing research and scholarship, identifying topics and activities associated with intercultural teaching and adapting them to a specific classroom can be overwhelming. We make it easier for faculty to utilize effective resources that prepare their students for the intercultural aspect of their COIL course.
Similar to any international experience, it is often difficult to describe or translate ‘what happened’. We acknowledge the critical partnership between faculty and international education professionals (e.g. Education Abroad Office, International Student and Scholar Office, etc.) when creating COIL programming. Therefore, we provide a summary report for each faculty member’s university at the conclusion of the COIL program that illustrates important aspects such as intercultural assessment data, key activities and program evaluations.
We believe in the importance of long-term engagement, especially between students and their former educational institutions. We provide resources to COIL alumni and track their growth after a COIL experience. Our belief is that the growth process is permanently and positively altered after an international learning experience and we endeavor to follow and support that growth.

What Faculty Have to Say
Bound International has helped me connect with an international instructor who has a course that aligns well with my course. They have provided valuable resources to help us link our courses together in a meaningful way, as well as, the tools to assess the impact of this experience on developing the intercultural competence of both the students and the instructors. Finally, Bound International has provided a mentor to help support us both during the development of our COIL program and its implementation.
Prof. Scott Schneider
University of Dayton – Engineering
The connection to [my faculty partner] in Bolivia has been wonderful and the highlight of the program for me… the training sessions (regular and optional ones) have been really useful and relevant. In addition, providing a coach for each team has been helpful. [My faculty partner] and I met with our coach and she provided us with many insights related to a logistics issue we were encountering. This has been invaluable - just knowing there is a dedicated person to reach out to is comforting. Also, the COIL program staff have been very accessible and ready to lend support whenever it is needed.
Stonehill College – Business
With years of taking students abroad, the thing that has been missing is interaction with their peers. COIL offers an opportunity for students to have valuable intercultural experiences by working on projects with students from another culture… Bound International matched me with a partner, provided valuable training in intercultural learning and learning technologies and provided a coach to work with us as we developed our course.
Dr. Lara Foley
University of Tulsa – Sociology
My interest in teaching a course using the COIL method is to give my students the opportunity to share their knowledge with young people from another cultural context, help them improve their intercultural communication skills and raise awareness about interculturality. The program has given me the opportunity to work with a group of highly competent teachers from diverse cultures. In addition, I have received training in the various topics related to the inclusion of internationalization in the teaching curriculum. It has been a very rewarding experience.
Dra. Ivette Pérez Matos
Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico – Humanistic and Pedagogical Studies
[Bound International] gave me a broad understanding of what COIL is and what we can achieve. All the COIL staff was very passionate, knowledgeable and super supportive. It gave us the opportunity to connect with an American university that have the same objectives as us, therefore, to give our students the opportunity to interact with American students in a joint course.
Evolve Abroad, Mexico - Sustainable Development
Despite my experience offering COIL, I did not have all the knowledge about the multiple possibilities of a COIL. During the Bound International COIL program, I learned more and I discovered other methodologies and useful tools (I wish I had known them before) and I met colleagues who shared great experiences and even with whom I might offer COILS in the near future.

Universidad EIA – Intercultural Management
I think the Bound International COIL program has been very helpful providing me with a space to get to know them as a collaborative team and their goals, so I can have a better understanding of their practices. Also, I appreciate Bound intentions to create a sense of community among the faculty involved. Bound International has provided us with a lot of great information through trainings, etc. and it has helped me to identify common goals with my partner. Bound has created a caring and supportive environment, and the professionalism, experience and engagement are noticeable.
